The Political Appropriation of the Struggle for Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May 1st was born as a symbol of workers&#039; resistance against unfair conditions.<br>It was a date to mark the fight for freedom: freedom to work fair hours, freedom to negotiate salaries, freedom to undertake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, like everything that threatens power, the original spirit has been kidnapped.<br>Today, in many countries, Labor Day is less a tribute to the worker \u2014 and more a celebration of the State, controlled unions and parties that parasitize the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>May Day: from spontaneous struggle to official celebration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1886, workers in Chicago organized strikes demanding an eight-hour workday.<br>They were persecuted, arrested and killed.<br>These men were not fighting for favors\u2014they were fighting for free contracts, for wages negotiated directly, without coercion from bosses or politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They didn&#039;t ask for subsidies.<br>They did not ask for artificial protections.<br>They only asked for the right to be masters of their own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, most official May Day celebrations are state-funded and used to reinforce dependency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Political speeches about \u201cguaranteed rights\u201d (and not achieved through real work).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Homages to unions that live off mandatory union membership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exaltation of the State as the \u201cgreat protector of the worker\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The original worker wanted less tutelage\u2014no more shackles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When the State presents itself as the \u201cfriend\u201d of the worker<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The modern state has transformed the struggle for freedom into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protection laws that, in practice, generate unemployment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taxes on work that punish those who want to grow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regulations that make hiring more bureaucratic, making it difficult for the poorest to move up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The result?<br>A stagnant labor market, high informality and workers trapped in cycles of dependency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who wins from this?<br>The unionized bureaucracy and the tax-collecting State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The free worker does not need saviors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The true worker is a creator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He creates value through his productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He negotiates his price freely in an open market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He seeks to improve on his own merits \u2014 not on state handouts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What destroys the worker is what destroys any market:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interventions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taxes,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barriers to free trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating work should be celebrating freedom \u2014 not the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Recovering May 1st as a symbol of freedom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we want to honor the original spirit of Labor Day, we need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defend the right to work freely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reject state guardianship over employment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restore the dignity of the worker as an agent of wealth creation, not as dependent on public policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The worker is greater than the State.<br>The market is fairer than bureaucracy.<br>Freedom is more powerful than any decree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udce9 Do you want to understand how market freedom is the worker&#039;s greatest ally?<br><strong>Subscribe to the Economic Radar newsletter<\/strong> and receive critical analyses on economics, work and freedom directly in your email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>O 1\u00ba de Maio nasceu como s\u00edmbolo da liberdade dos trabalhadores, mas foi sequestrado pelo Estado e sindicatos para refor\u00e7ar depend\u00eancias pol\u00edticas.
