The popularity of cryptocurrencies has forced governments around the world to react. And their response has been predictable: create state versions of what was born to be decentralized<\/strong>. Central Bank Digital Currencies, the so-called CBDCs<\/strong>, are the new bet of States to maintain control over money \u2014 now in a digital version and, above all, traceable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is a currency created, managed and monitored by a central bank really an innovation? Or is it just the most dangerous evolution of state financial surveillance?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

What are CBDCs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Central bank digital currencies are not cryptocurrencies. They are digitized state currencies<\/strong>, with the issuer's full control over circulation, destination, tracking and even validity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Bitcoin is scarce, autonomous and immutable, CBDCs are programmable, unlimited and obedient to political authority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The risk of objectionable money<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Imagine a system where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The government may prevent you from sending funds to certain people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Money can \u201cexpire\u201d if not spent within a pre-defined period of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • \u201cUnsustainable\u201d purchases are blocked by credit programming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Sounds dystopian? It's the scenario that central banks and international organizations<\/strong> as the BIS and the IMF are already openly considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The difference between real crypto and state crypto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The key is decentralization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Real cryptocurrencies operate on networks no single control, no authorization and no central point of failure.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • State cryptos, even if digital, remain under the complete control of an issuing authority<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Technological freedom only exists when control is not in the hands of the State.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      Freedom cannot be outsourced<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The Austrian School has already warned: the greatest danger of monetary centralization is not inefficiency \u2014 it is the power it concentrates. With CBDCs, the State can link currency to behavior<\/strong> of the citizen, creating a system where access to money depends on obedience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Technology, by itself, is not liberating.<\/strong> It all depends on who controls it \u2014 and for what purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Cryptocurrencies were born to to escape the traditional banking system, not to reinforce it<\/strong>.
      Accepting CBDCs as a replacement for physical money or decentralized cryptos is giving up financial freedom in exchange for controlled convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
